Over the course of my teaching career, especially as a language teacher, I’ve come to realise that when you’re teaching a language, you’re not just teaching words on a page, you are showing students how language represents culture, tradition and identity.
It’s the teacher’s responsibility to demonstrate to students how language is used in real life, in real situations and with real people. That’s why I believe that every lesson should be connected to the world outside. Students should be given the opportunity to explore ideas and different perspectives so they can decide for themselves how they want to engage with the world in the future.
I’ve come to believe that being a good teacher requires flexibility, empathy and a dash of silliness. Students need a space to express themselves, make mistakes, and try again without feel embarrassed or judged. I think learning only really happens when students feel safe enough to participate, ask questions, and take risks. For me, teaching is about creating an environment where students feel comfortable enough to grow, communicate, think independently and eventually believe in their own ability to succeed.
